    Default Hawk Mountain Camping

Can anyone verify for me if there are campsites at/nearby the Hawk Mountain Shelter? Thanks.

If you feel like walking an extra half mile, you can take the old AT up to the top of Hawk Mountain where there is about a 10 acre grassy field. Not many people go up there anymore. There's no water up there. The trail is straight across from the shelter trail - just keep going up. When we (GATC volunteers) carry in chips for the privy sometimes we park up there and walk down instead of parking at Hightower Gap and walking up.

Sometimes the Army Rangers are camped up there...

Remember that there can be 25-50 people planning to stay there in march. They've got to stay somewhere!

There's plenty of space to camp.

forrest, I did not realize that there was a field up past HMS...I will have to go look for it next time I head that way...

yes a neat spot is when you get to the trail that leads to the shelter turn and follow the drainage up the mountain when you get to the top there is a clearing with a great night view of dahlonega with plenty of room. Just beware it is a landing Zone for the Army Rangers too so you might see a Helo land infront of you. But I haven't had that happen yet
