Default What are the odds, Cayman to Katahdin?

    Well, I'm obviously bored today....

so I'm curious, what are the odds makers saying about a dive instructor on the Cayman Islands making it to Katahdin (and via the trail from springer, but not walking from cayman )? yes, no, 50:50,...?

I'll give you 50/50 if you have Diana Nyad towing you!

yeah, would go to 0 if it was Lloyd Bridges doing the towing (whether he's dead or alive wouldn't matter at this point)

psyenz I've been to cayman about 10 times, i'll be leaving to become a diver in the Army in 3 months and being a dive instructor is something i'd really like to pursue after i get out, would you mind if i pick your brain over PMs a bit?
There's no reward at the end for the most miserable thru-hiker.
After gear you can do a thru for $2,000.
No training is a substitute for just going and hiking the AT. You'll get in shape.

Sure, no worries jdc, be happy to. Diving in the army and being a recreational dive instructor and guide are a world apart.

well, I was expecting something, here I thought you guys and gals would provide some alternative motivation for me :-) soooo, let's add a little more info, but only a little....

how about a 57 year old dive instructor with a currently planned start date of 25-Mar....?

The only issue I can think of is how you'll deal with the cold rain. Going from a nice, warm tropical island to the harsh weather of the southern Appalachians the end of March will be a real shock to the system. If you don't freeze to death in the first month, you should be as good to go as anyone else is.

Although your probably in pretty good shape with kicking your legs underwater and all that, do some hiking before you leave. I imagine there is a tall, volcanic hill you can climb on the Caymans to get your trail legs started. Do that climb once a day between now and then and you should be able to hit the trail running.

I like your chances, I'm guessing you are in better shape than most that start a thru-hike... PADI dive master 28 years. Good Luck!!!

50%. The divers I know are incredible .

Stock figure for a random person is 25% chance of completion. I give you better than average odds. Strengthen those knees! (since swimming is not a load bearing activity)
