Aha! This shot shows the snake's color and pattern well, and its habit of curling up in a crack. There was a snake picture over on Sgt. Rock's site with a discussion thread as to its identity; that other snake was hidden, with only a small segment showing. -

no - was in the middle of a side trail in the Cohutta Wilderness Area. we took a side trail down to a campsite by the river. The snake was in the middle of the trail on a ridgeline above the campsite we were hiking to. He didn't move when as we (6 or 7 of us) stepped around him. was still there the next morning (was early August). We assumed he must have recently fed, and was sunning/sleeping it off....
