I am so proud to have them. You did some fine work on the cards !"
~ Lucy Seeds (a daughter of Grandma Gatewood ~ 1st woman thru-hiker)
had her daughter Katherine write, " Thank you for sending the new AT note cards,
to my mother, Lucy Seeds. It meant a lot to her and we both think you did an
outstanding job !" ~actually, QuickStep (my printer), EarthTone (Museum Manager),
Larry Luxenberg (Museum President) and myself did a team effort of two years to
develop this packet of 12 Exhibits Mote Cards.

Paul Wylezol, International President of the SIA/IAT,
sent me a letter dated September 24 which I want to pass along to you.
He was one of the SIA/IAT dignitaries who presented our A. T. Museum with the

I believe that as an AT hiker, we all should realize its existence; learn, appreciate,
and enjoy the many natural wonders of the SIA/IAT and its culturally rich diversity.
As we do so, we will discern how our A. T. fills a place in this broader "international trail"
of these ancient Appalachian Mountains, just a piece of our home Earth.

THE GATHERING ~ MUSEUM CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS ~ & MORE !
Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,
Thursday, Oct. 8th., the campground area of the 34th. annual Gathering
of ALDHA (Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association) at Shippensburg, PA
began to fill with tents ! By early Friday, even the spaces between tents
were being occupied !
Friday's "Opening Night Ceremonies" drew a large, hiker community crowd.
Afterward, just outside the Multi Purpose Room, a reception social lasted until 11PM !
This Columbus Day Weekend event had many activities ~ program presentations
went on all day Saturday, and Sunday afternoon, a Hiker Fair was conducted, meals
were available in the Shippensburg Cafeteria (many thought it was the best food venue
of the recent Gatherings), there was a dance Saturday night, and campfires at the
campground !
The A. T. Museum had four tables at the Hiker Fair Friday through Sunday morning.
Besides the current posters of the contributors to the Building Fund Campaign as they
will appear on the permanent plaque to hang in The Museum in June 2017, membership/
contribution forms and other Museum info were provided here. Membership efforts
brought in a return of $315 to our A. T. Museum. Joe Harold, Museum Manger offered some
Museum merchandise for sale, as well as the operation of the Silent Auction ~ again a
source of needed funds for the Museum's operation and expansion. THANK YOU to all
who made donations of items to our Silent Auction. THANK YOU to all who made a bid.
The weather cooperated with fine, sunny autumnal days. In sum, the hiker community
once again enjoyed another grand, autumn, hiker-reunion known as "The Gathering".
MANY THANKS to all who gave us a most successful 34th. ALDHA Gathering !
More info at www.aldha.org
MUSEUM"S BUILDING PROGRESS
After the Gathering, I made a stop at The Museum and was "WOWed" by the progress !
Several pleasing discoveries awaited:
~ the outside ramp has only the last straight section from the corner to the front walk
to be constructed (of course, there will be some other "finishing touches" to it)
~ as I climbed the stairs to upper third and fourth building levels, I discovered that we
now have new walls up there ! The sheet rock has been installed ! Additionally, the duct work
for the heating/cooling system has also been installed ! Joe, Museum Manager, informed me
that "We are now climate-controlled" ! KUDOS ALL AROUND to all those involved with this
volunteer work and a BIG "THANK YOU" ! Your support of our A. T. Museum is appreciated.
Watch for a "progress report" from Larry Luxenberg, Museum President soon. It will appear
in the upcoming "2015 Year End Mailing Letter".
If you wish to join us as a member of the Appalachian Trail Museum Society, or if you need
to renew your membership,do so now and take advantage of the EARLY BIRD SPECIAL ~
for a $20 or more contribution, you will receive membership for the remainder of 2015,
AND ALL OF 2016 ! See the "FORM" attachment for a printable form with plaque level info
(this is your opportunity to be listed on a permanent plaque to be hung in the Museum
in June 2017) ! OR, to contribute electronically, go to the Museum's website: <www.atmuseum.org>
and click on the "Support" tab at the top of the home page.
OR, just write a check made out to the "A. T. Museum" and mail it to:

All contributions receive an IRS receipt and an acknowledgement note. Those of $20
or more also receive an Appalachian Trail Museum Society membership card.
NOTE: All donations from Jan. 2013 through Dec. 2016 are totaled together to give an individual
plaque listing level. If you are already listed, consider moving up to the next contributor level by
making another donation. This new permanent plaque will be hung in June 2017 in The Museum.
MUSEUM'S GROUND-FLOOR LEVEL PROGRESS
The construction here is mostly completed, with sheet rock walls and paint.
However, only a temporary exhibit and a part of the children's exhibit are available.
This area will be totally complete by June 4, 2016 in time for its "dedication ceremony" the
Saturday after Friday's A. T. Hall of Fame Banquet ! MAKE YOUR PLANS TO ATTEND NOW !
I have added four attachments to this Museum Email Update which I hope are of interest.

REPORT: LAST SUNDAY'S VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION DINNER
Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,
Last Sunday, November 15, we held the annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner at Ironmaster's Mansion,
just west up the road from the A. T. Museum's front door. I want to share with you this event's report
written by Joe Harold, Appalachian Trail Museum Manager (photos are also taken by him):
Annual Volunteer Recognition Event
Yesterday, we held our annual Volunteer Recognition Event, one of our favorite traditions at the Museum.
The day itself, was a beautiful fall day. Clear azure sky, bright sun with a warm breeze occasionally rustling
the fallen leaves around the Museum.
We started the event with some light snacks in the renovated basement, followed by a dedication to our new serviceberry tree
that was planted in the middle of October. We dedicated the tree to Katy Sexton, one of our most valued and dedicated volunteers,
who passed away last year. Larry said a few words about the dedication and then Jay told us a story of Katy and how she loved the serviceberry.
Georgia told us a little more about the tree and Red Wolf followed up with some interesting information.
It was a moving dedication.
Next, we all headed to the Ironmasters Mansion to eat so much food, it was ridiculous. There was squash soup, meatballs,
vegetable lasagna, pork bbq, corn pudding, baked ziti, meatloaf, salad, and more. There were many pies and cookies for desert.
It was all very filling.
We finished up the event with our recognition part. After talking about our milestones and accomplishments of the year,
we thanked those of you that have gone that extra mile, whether you were present or not.
We also awarded our second annual President's Award to Gwen Loose and our Volunteer of the Year was Michele Burton.
The museum exists because of all the volunteers. Every minute that is donated is appreciated so much.
I thank you all for what you have given to the A.T. Museum and I hope you want to continue to serve at the Museum next season.
~ Joe Harold, A. T. Museum Manager

Many thanks to all for your support of our Appalachian Trail Museum. As the AT was buildt and maintained by volunteers,
it is all too fitting that the museum of the AT ~ the Appalachian Trail Museum ~ is also so buildt and maintained by volunteers
who donate work, artifacts, and the financial support which allows us to continue to expand into all of the "Old Mill" , as well as
to "pay the daily bills". MANY THANKS .
Watch for a "progress report" from Larry Luxenberg, Museum President soon.
It will appear in the upcoming "2015 Year End Mailing Letter".
Join or renew your A. T. Museum Society membership for a $20 or more contribution.
You will receive a membership for the remainder of this year and all of 2016.

THANKSGIVING !
Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,
We are thankful for our A. T. Museum's sixth year of operation !
2015 has been another successful year of the A. T. Museum's service to
the AT community, and major expansion construction into the remainder
of our "Old Mill" building ~ the upper two floors now have actual sheet rock walls !
From all of us at the Appalachian Trail Museum,
~ ~ HAPPY & BLESSED THANKSGIVING ! ~ ~

~ ~ HAPPY THANKSGIVING ALL !
On this day I count my many blessings, which are more than I deserve.
This day was set aside by our country for this purpose, to give thanks.
I do so reverently, and know many of you do also.
Yet, we live in "an unsure and unsafe world", as was so viciously displayed
last week by those evil murderers in Paris.
That same evening I was on a train for Harrisburg and The Museum's Volunteer Event,
and spent some number of hours talking with a world-wide traveling, 80-year old man.
He had spent time in many of the Europen cities in Spain, France, Belgium as I had, and
we were extolling their various virtues and delights. Oddly, our conversion concluded
with the mutual agreement that "of all cities, we REALLY do love Paris" and
"watching-the-world-go-by sitting in one of the many Parisian sidewalk cafes"
~ we had not heard of the trouble there.
I take this special day and opportunity to share something not really related to our A. T. Museum,
but which I hope you appreciate anyway ? I ran across this following article which displays
for all the actual acheivement of those Godless murderers.
For your assesment, here is one "TRUE PERSPECTIVE" ~ see the attached article.
If it gives you a better understanding of what happened there in Paris, then I have
not wasted printed word or your time.

A. T. MUSEUM ~ A SHORT REPORT BY MUSEUM MANAGER JOE HAROLD
Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,
Joe Harold, A. T. Museum Manager, was recently asked by
the Michaux Forest Association Newsletter editor
to write a short report on the Museum's progress this past year.
I want to share his reply here and the actual MFA NEWSLETTER
in the attachment. The Michaux Forest area is a very close neighbor
to our Museum.
~ RED WOLF o'da SMOKY'S
Here is a quick update on the Appalachian Trail Museum for the MFA Newsletter.
Submitted by Joe Harold, A.T. Museum manager
The Appalachian Trail Museum recently completed its sixth successful season
here in the middle of Michaux Forest. In 2015 we welcomed 8899 visitors and
our volunteers served over 2500 hours acting as Docents, hiking guides,
clean up crew, researchers, construction crew and grounds keeping crews
among other things.
Progress has been made on the basement Children's Area renovation and
new renovation has started on the second and third floors. The ADA approved
entrance ramp to the second floor has made continuous progress and we hope
to have it finished in late Spring of 2016.
We will also be dedicating our Children's Area in June of 2016.
A local Boy Scout, Ali, has completed his Eagle Project by rebuilding
our fire ring and building two picnic tables and a wood shelf.
Our outdoor plantings are all managed by cabin owner Georgia Freet,
who constantly cares for our native wild flowers and grasses.
Georgia also oversaw the planting of a serviceberry tree, which
we planted in honor of one of our most dedicated volunteers,
Katy Sexton, who passed away last year.
The A.T. Museum is always looking for new volunteers to work
at the museum, especially in our most important job, the Docent/Greeter.
If you like to have very pleasant and enjoyable conversations with visitors,
both hiker and casual, and want to share your love of the Appalachian Trail,
the Park and the Forest, you can contact Joe Harold,
the A. T. Museum manager at [email protected]

A. T. MUSEUM PRESIDENT'S YEAR END LETTER ~ 2015 PROGRESS REPORT
The Appalachian Trail Museum recently completed its sixth successful season in the midst
of Pennsylvania's beautiful South Mountain. In 2015 we welcomed 8,899 visitors and
our volunteers served more than 2,500 hours acting as docents, hiking guides, cleanup crew,
researchers, and construction and grounds keeping crews among many other things.
Renovation: This season our crew under chief Ron Bungay completed the Children's Area and
with the help of twenty ALDHA members on Columbus Day started work on the second and third floors, which will be the new main Museum entrance. Ron also disassembled the Devils Racecourse shelter in preparation for its use as an exhibit. The crew led by Jack Adams plans to finish the entrance ramp to the second floor by Spring.
We will celebrate our progress by dedicating the Children's Area in June during our Hall of Fame weekend.
We hope this Children's Festival will be the biggest event at the Museum since the Grand Opening.
The ground floor work is funded in part by an $18,000 grant from the Cumberland County Visitors Bureau, a generous supporter of the Museum from our inception. Part of the work involved installing heating and air conditioning units. The new climate control will make visiting the Museum more comfortable and help to preserve our exhibits. We also installed the first of the Children's exhibits, which were designed by Gwen Loose and Graphik Masters.
Collection: Our collection continues to grow with a wide variety of unusual items. Among the additions to the collection this year were many artifacts of Nimblewill Nomad, a prolific and charismatic hiker. A colorful cast iron plaque from the Delaware Water Gap is now on display in our sign exhibit area, courtesy of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. Dave Sherman traced the plaque's fascinating history with a wide ranging research effort. The plaque ties together many of the strands of the A.T.'s early history.
David Field donated some bunk poles from the historic Poplar Ridge Shelter in Maine. He had helped
to install the poles in 1961 and to remove them 54 years later.
Other items donated included a large geologic map from the International Appalachian Trail,
many trail registers, surveys from early thru-hikers by Susan Gail Arey and additional books
from Roger Williamson and Linda Patton (for the children's library). To house this growing collection,
we expanded our storage space in Carlisle.
Memberships: Membership Secretary Robert "Red Wolf" Croyle has grown the membership
to 488 individual members, sent out more than 129,000 emails to our list of 4,100 contacts and increased visits to the Museum's thread on Whiteblaze.net to more than 116,700. He did membership and sales tables at Trail Days, the Biennial, and the Gathering.
Building Fund Campaign: The campaign, which runs from 2013 to 2016, has now raised $165,000, exceeding the goal of $150,000. The campaign will be commemorated with a plaque listing donors' names to be dedicated in June 2017. The fund will help pay for the renovation of the Museum's Old Mill home. The opportunity to be listed on the plaque ends Dec. 31, 2016.
Museum Store: Museum Manager Joe Harold expanded offerings and brought in an improved credit card system. The offerings include new books; note cards with pictures of Museum exhibits; and a Captain Stupid t-shirt designed by Margy Schmidt. The Captain is the lead character in "Thru: An Appalachian Trail Love Story" by pioneer Thru-Hiker Richard Judy.
The Museum also continues to distribute "A Grip on the Mane of Life,
an Authorized Biography of Earl V. Shaffer" by David Donaldson and Maurice J. Forrester.
Both books are available for the holidays at the Museum's website, atmuseum.org, at a 10% discount.
Earl Shaffer Foundation: The Museum continued its long standing partnership
with the Earl Shaffer Foundation by agreeing to provide storage and fulfillment
for the Foundation's books and other products.
Website: The Museum's website was redesigned by webmaster Alan "Gonzo" Strackeljahn,
Board Member Jim Foster and Joe Harold. Along with a fresh look, the website now includes
a Museum store.
Landscaping: Georgia Freet manages our outdoor plantings of native wild flowers and grasses. Georgia also oversaw the planting this fall of a serviceberry tree near the Museum in honor of one of our most dedicated volunteers, Katy Sexton, who passed away last year.
Eagle Scout Project: A local Boy Scout, Ali, completed his Eagle project -- rebuilding our fire ring and
building two picnic tables and a wood storage bin.
Publicity: Joe Harold was featured in a new documentary, "Trail Magic," about Grandma Gatewood. The Museum is participating in a community reading project by Longwood Gardens. They are featuring the book, "Grandma Gatewood's Walk," by Ben Montgomery. Libraries throughout eastern and central Pennsylvania, including the Cumberland County Libraries, are participating.
The Museum will also appear in a segment of "Mystery at the Museum," on the Travel Channel.
It's currently scheduled for 9 p.m. on Jan. 1, 2016. The segment was filmed at the Museum in May.
Programs: The Museum continues to have a full program of speakers all summer on Sunday afternoons. The programs cover a wide variety of subjects related to the A.T., local history and the outdoors. Ideas for speakers and programs are welcome.
Trail Events: The Museum was represented at many A.T. related events during the course of the year. For the 17th year, the Museum had an informational table at Trail Days in Damascus, Va., and Red Wolf displayed the Museum’s A. T. Traveling Exhibit. As usual the Museum sponsored programs at the ATC Biennial meeting in July and the ALDHA Gathering in October. Joe Harold took the Museum's traveling exhibit to Monson, Maine. for the "Trails End Festival" in September, and did a program at the "Northern Ruck" in January and the first "Flip Flop Kick Off Festival" in Harpers Ferry in May.
Strategic Plan: The Museum board began work in October on a new Strategic Plan.
The current plan dates to 2006, long before we found a home in Pine Grove Furnace State Park. Linda Witmer, longtime head of the Cumberland County Historical Society, helped initiate the effort, which is scheduled for completion in the spring.

and enjoyable conversations with visitors, both hiker and casual, and want to share your love
of the Appalachian Trail, please contact Joe Harold.
