A website is currently in the works @ www.devinhiking.com -- the site is designed to give me the ability to update my status and exact location via text message directly into a clickable interactive google map. Additional blog posts, photos, and video will also be maintained as service allows via my web enabled smartphone. The page will be live hopefully mid to late November. The heart of the site (interactive map, blog, guestbook, and media) are all in place and working, however the final finishing touches are currently being added to the design.

This will be my first long distance backpacking trip and it's pretty much all I think about, especially at work. I am gonna try to hike as ultra light as possible, and I'm building a Ray Jardine backpack. I really respect and admire Ray and most of the methods he proposes, especially leave no trace and his light weight approach to backpacking. Can't wait to meet a bunch of fellow hikers and I know this will be a fullfilling and challenging adventure. Counting down the days!

How about starting in Harpers Ferry in April, going south, then hooking it up to Katahdin around July 15 and going southbound from there, ending up in Harper's Ferry again? No ice storms in Georgia, no black flies in Maine, get to see parts of the fall in Maine. have you thought of this approach?

I have thought about it, particularly when I was on the trail last year and, although I'm not a purist, there is something about doing it all in one straight linear route that appeals to me.
