Other: We are a late 40's married couple. Retired Army. Looking forward to first time thru-hike in 2010. We are originally from South Jersey, currently from Houston, TX but will be moving to Lakeland, FL later this year. We will be doing most of our prep from there maybe even going up to Amicalola Park. Still researching and planning, gathering equipment, and doing some walking. There are just not suffiicient hiking trails in South Texas. Walking on asphalt walking paths with no trees in 100+ degree weather just plain sucks. Will get some better overnight pre-hikes in this winter.

Any additional info that you want the world to know:
Has been a goal now for about 4 years. Currently on my third pass through my gear trying to reduce weight. Just bought a lighter tent and a new sleeping bag. I think I am in the final stages of planning my gear now. Soon I have to start planning my meals.
I plan to start out slow (low mileage days) and work up to a reasonable pace. I want to enjoy the trip, not win a marathon.
I would love to have a hiking partner to start out with.
Hiked from Springer to just North of Hot Springs and the flip flopped to Massachusetts and hiked South until Labor Day in 2010. Plan to continue in 2011.

I live in Maine and am hiking this summer and fall as a sort of warm up. I'm hoping to go as ultralight as possible, and already invested in lightweight tent, sleeping bag, and trekking poles. I've hiked Katahdin twice and am planning to go again next month. I'll probably do the AT thruhike solo for the most part, although a partner or group for company during the 100-Mile Wilderness would be greatly appreciated. I tend to hike at a pretty swift pace, though I do love to stop and smell the pine trees.
