I am a late adopter, so just tried this in the mountains for the first time.
It was great, but is there an even better one?

Rickb peakfinder is as good as it gets as far as I know. I was up in Maine last month and from The Horn (I think it was, maybe saddleback) Katahdin came up in the far far distance on Peakfinder.

I have had horrible luck with PeakFinder and I don’t understand. Mine thinks I’m in Tennessee no matter where I go and it never updates. I got it because my hiking partner had it but even hers doesn’t work half the time
My hiking companion has peakfinder on her phone and it seems to work okay here in the Whites. It's still a little confusing as it shows a lot of peaks!
You might have to download maps for the area your in. It needs something to reference to. You might have to check your GPS settings to make sure your being tracked.

Now that I think about it, my hiking buddy has it as well and last month in the whites he described how you have to have downloaded something blah blah blah technical stuff in order to run it in airplane mode.

I was embarrassed to find our that my cellphone case was interfering with my phone’s compass... which resulted in me seeing Tennessee peaks in Scotland - and Ben Nevis in Tennessee. Removed the case and the app performed as intended.
