Amicalola Falls State Park, where the approach trail starts, is run by a corporation. Several of Georgia's parks are.

Evidence tends to demonstrate the opposite, there is little to no difference between government and private sector operations for things like this. The difference being, government is accountable to the public through FOI and various layers of elected/appointed committees and responsible departments. There is an old adage that one can have any two of better, faster, cheaper, but not all three, most instances of privatization illustrate this pretty well.
Myself, I would prefer shuttering parks that States do not want to support (this is a political will issue overall) as opposed to selling them off. They can be reopened, they cannot be repurchased easily. The other avenue would be legislation limiting liability and allowing volunteer groups to keep parks open (or the trails accessible and open if nothing else). That would probably be the win/win solution.
For me, it's simple. The gov't wants to cut budget on parks because other budgets are out of control and unbalanced. Stop voting for politicians who don't help and who are part of wasting the money we have already given through taxes to be able to maintain our beautiful parks.
Federal Funding with the tax dollars we already paid seems to make more sense for states and all of us.
Private companies do often operate better budgets than gov't. They have to as they don't have an endless supply of money, aka our tax dollars. Problem is, they are for profit. Meaning the cut costs AND make us pay more. That is pay for something we already have paid for with our taxes. Private parks make no sense to anyone besides greedy business people and corrupt politicians.
Can you think of anyone that cares about the parks as much as the people on this forum that could do what it would take to run a private for profit budget for parks? A person that could keep it affordable and maintain its beauty? Do you think that "We the People" would get a tax cut for the less funds needed by gov't for parks that they would no longer fund?
To me, it's just simple. Hold the government accountable to proper use of OUR money and OUR land.
