Through Central New York the North Country Trail is in great shape and rarely includes a road walk - mostly because it uses the white-blazed Finger Lakes Trail and all of its existing lean-to's and campsites. I try to hike on it 3 times a week. The best sections are in the largest state forests, such as Kennedy and Morgan Hill. I can usually put together loops between 5 and 15 miles with some good views, waterfalls, springs and a lean-to. Some small, privately owned sections do close during hunting season, though... which would be a pain for the thru-hiker.
