We received the following message last week. I posted it on a 2014 thru-hiker Facebook page, and no one has yet claimed the dog, so I am trying here.
The original post:
Hi,
Would you please post this information where thru-hikers on the Appalachian Trail might see it?
This little black Pomeranian was found on the Appalachian Trail near the Greene County, Tennessee/ Madison County, North Carolina state line in early April, 2014.
He is very thin, but is safe and at the Greeneville-Greene County Humane Society – a no-kill shelter.
We don't know whether his owner is frantically looking for him or not, but thought we'd try to send some information and his photo to some outfitters so there's a chance of finding his owner.
We would appreciate your help in posting this. Thanks so much.

and more information today:
The dog had been on the trail. He had a little thread or rope as though he had gotten away, and he smelled of wood smoke. A hiker picked him up, put him in his pack and took him to him to a small community, a day or two trail north of Hot Springs, where someone called animal control.
The dog remains unclaimed at this time.
