Just to be super clear, you will need at minimum microspikes, snowshoes (with traction), and one or two carbide-tipped poles. Vaya con Gaia--

If you have the right equipment, you will be fine. I've gone up and down the north face of Moosilauke with 24'' base of snow plus a foot of powder over it, no problem with a combination of snowshoes...
I also frequently hike alone, including doing a number of the NH 4K's in winter.
Just to add to all the above, I won't hike anywhere in the Whites after Nov. 1 without microspikes in my bag. I...
Strongly agree about the pee bottle--getting out of your bag and tent will lose you all the heat you've built up while sleeping.
But I would not keep partly filled bottle in bag. You will end up...
Thank you! I really appreciate your interest in the book.
My right knee fully recovered, eventually, by the way. Now it's my left knee . . .

Hikers--
I just published a book about section-hiking the AT, as much a "nature" book as an AT book. Here's the back cover description, if you're interested:
Unique among Appalachian Trail...
Speaking of the ATC Journeys magazine--
the ATC seems to have given the movie a lot of promotion, and I kept seeing ATC quoted in the press in ways that endorsed the movie.
Does anyone know if...
stayed at Shaw's this August (2013)--still a great place, hospitable, very hiker oriented, good shuttle service, very clean.
why can't they just have bear boxes at the affected shelters? that seems to work in the northeast. asking hikers to carry bear cannisters for just 5 miles of the trail seems a little odd.
Often too you can wedge tent stakes in between the boards--can take some pushing and some pulling later to get them out but usually they stay put once in.
mothballs will keep rodents away and will not attract bears so you could you those.
I've never had this problem either.
As to wool sox at night--sleep with them in your bag. That way they're...
Better than ever getting dehydrated. Conditions can creep up on you--and on some days you could find yourself very happy to have that second liter in your backpack. I was coming to the end of an 18...
raisins have a very high calorie to weight ratio--there's a reason hikers have been carrying gorp (raisins plus nuts plus m&ms or whatever) for decades as a calorie + energy supplement.
I've hiked a little over half the AT now and have not had any trouble with dogs on the Trail except when getting near and going through towns. You can get very aggressive dogs "protecting" their...
stayed here a few nights ago--Jan. 5--the shelter was surrounded by 1-2 feet of unbroken powder (the Fishin Jimmy Trail was broken out but not the .1 of Kinsman Pond Trail to the shelter). The new...
thanks, Dave. Checked Views from Top as well--looks like it's not in great shape but halfway usable--
best,

maybe it's b/c I too am from Western Washington State, but light rains don't bother me. I'd much rather hike in a light rain than in 80 plus degrees heat--as I get older the heat really slows me...
Not surprised that no one has written up Ethan Pond yet. First, it's just a few miles from NH 302 and various accommodations, including amc's Highland Center. Second, it is run by the amc and has a...
Hi, hope someone catches this message who knows the answer. I want to do an overnight at Rocky Branch Shelter #2, in the White Mtns, and read that it was scheduled to be torn down. Does anyone know...
I stayed (alone) at Gentian Pond shelter last October ('08) and stopped in a couple weeks ago (Aug 31) on my way N thro' the Mahoosucs. I was surprised to find there'd been a slight Trail relocation...
stayed here last week. The well was very low--just some mud at the bottom. Shelter itself pretty skanky--trash + a couple of airmattresses from weekenders/partiers, droppings inside, no broom to...
You don't necessarily need to buy a new bag. Just supplement the bag you have with a silk liner for the first month or so. Then you can mail the liner home, or keep it for the hot times, sleep in it...
This shelter is just a few miles N of the Nolichucky River and Uncle Johnny's and other places to stay. Seemd from the register that no one stays the night there much, but I did, on March 31, alone,...
I spent the night here on March 30, at the end of a long 20 mile day. Nice, simple 3-sided single platform shelter with a cooking ledge in front of the sleeping platform. Room for 6. Good water...
