It's a 2 pound sony camera. Not suitable for hiking. BUT you can set most cameras on manual. If you set your cam on manual, you can butt it up on a tree or rock to keep it stable and take multiple exposures. You'll need to take one overexposed, one normal and one underexposed. Cam ~must~ not move during multiple exposures. When you get home, you use HDR programs to merge those exposures together to get the result. Look up HDR on google and try it out -

The new cameras have the extra range. Something like 46 bits. It can hold the highlights and not make the shadows dark. A larger data only saved in a different format.
