Description by Youngblood
Muskrat Creek Shelter is the first shelter in North Carolina for nobo thru-hikers. It is 78.4 miles north of Springer and holds about 7 people on its sleeping platform. It has a picnic table under the roof overhand. (Woods Hole Shelter in Georgia was built like this shelter.)

Re: Muskrat Creek Shelter
The original shelter was a much larger A frame. On my 75 thru attempt I walked right by it without knowing it was there - even though a Ranger who had come up to the Addis Gap shelter had told us it had just been built. I have wondered why the huge A frame was replaced with a smaller shelter on a part of the trail that sees such heavy seasonal use. Anyone know what happened to the A frame. There are a lot of shelters on the trail that are older than it would be.
