Re: Hard part
Reminds me of my first shakedown hike with my then teenage daughter in southeast Michigan in 2007. I was hoping to take her to Grayson Highlands for her first backpacking trip and we were doing a 9-mile day hike with her carrying a 15-pound pack on fairly flat woods trail west of Ann Arbor. About halfway through we climbed a mini-hill, gaining perhaps 50 feet in the process. At the top, she asked if that was comparable to AT mountains. My first thought was, maybe she's not quite ready for the AT. Work demands got in the way that spring, so we didn't get out until May 2010 when she had no problem with the climbs north of Standing Indian.
