Description by Irish Eddy
Gathland State Park is the former estate of George Alfred Townsend, a noted Civil War Correspondent, who used the pen name "Gath." He named the estate Gathland, sometimes called Gapland. The A.T. traverses the former estate grounds, as well as the Civil War Battlefield of Cramptons Gap. This marker notes Gath's intended burial plot and mausoleum. However, Gath died penniless in New York, and was buried in Philadelphia. The inscription above the tomb reads, "Good night Gath." SoBo 1154.8. NoBo 1023.5.
