Description for Woodpeckers???

Woodpeckers were extremely active in this area, but could they have caused this much damage? Any ideas? Taken near the Thistle Wood Shelter, Vermont.

Yes, the Pileated Woodpecker can really tear up a tree as your picture shows.

I think Woodsy's right, but then he knows all about birds.
Hope you listened to the recording. You're probably more likely hear a pileated woodpecker than see one.
I think I listed its song/call on my own top 10 list for A.T. hikers to learn when we put one together some time ago.

Definitely the work of a Pileated. They make rectangular holes like that.
