Re: Upper Goose Pond Shelter - Closed For The Season (nov 2008)
Okay, so stupid question, but are all of these really nice "cabins" free for thru-hikers to use just like any shelter? No reservation needed? -

zjindra3 - The short answer is it depends.Upper Goose Pond cabin (which is pictured in the Photograph) is free to use, though there is a moral obligation to make a donation (Just slip some money into the plastic piggy bank that they have inside). Other cabins such as the Mohican Outdoor Center in New Jersey and the "Huts" in the White Mountains in New Hampshire charge standard rates, the huts in particular usually require reservations during the more popular months. Also note that most of these cabins are not open year round, guidebooks will have the needed details and contact info. The standard three sided shelters that you see on the trail are almost always free to use.
