Re: 0012 Violet Wood Sorrel
The number of florets suggests possibly a type of phlox. It's always good to include a leaf or two in a wildflower photo, since that would clinch the ID. Phlox have oval-shaped leaves; sorrels' leaves are clover-like (but they are not in the clover family). -

Re: 0012 Violet Wood Sorrel
Thanks,
Does picture below help? I am not an expert, I just like to share my hiking trips with family and friends so I snap a lot of pictures. I searched the Internet for identification, I may have identified this flower incorrectly. Thanks for helping./Users/anne/Desktop/ATTILA/AT/AT pictures/2009 07 11-14 Georgia No. 1/20090711 GA Approach Trail Amacalola SP to Black Gap Shelter/20090711 30 GA CNF Violet Wood Sorrel -4.3.JPG -

Re: 0012 Violet Wood Sorrel
It's not easy to ID a plant. You did a good job finding a flower of similar shape and color. You also need to consider the way the flowers grow on the stem--whether each flower is on a separate stem, whether several flowers are clumped in a group at the top or spread out in a row along the stem. Leaf number, shape, and placement on the stem are important, too.
The more flowers you examine closely, the easier it gets. Plants add a lot of interest to hikes--there's always something new or something familiar that looks different at different times of year.
