Look at the sleeping bag...what a lunker! Some of the stuff seems "okay", like the pack and the stove. I attended Gene's talks the last two years - interesting stuff. He is personable and funny. They more typically wore long pants and long sleeve shirts, 'cause they had to do much more bushwhacking. Gene showed great foresight in saving his gear. Despite the poorly maintained trail and heavier gear, old-timers tended to do their hikes faster. Gene (1951) and Jim Burson (1959) both had a single zero day; neither made a phone call; both finished in @ 120-130 days (even less for Earl S.). -

It was a great pleasure to meet them both, and listen to their stories and funny tails of the appalachian trail.
