Is this where you leave your pack if you don't carry it up Katahdin?

These walk-in sites are great, 3 lean-tos and 3 tentsites, all right on Katahdin Stream. You leave your pack on the Ranger's porch and borrow one of the daypacks he suppies. Not many know the Ranger at Katahdin Stream bought most of those packs himself for the thrus to use!

Well that was sure nice of the ranger.

Katahdin Stream runs between the picnic tables and the ranger\\\'s cabin which gives the site a nice open area. Even though one can drive a car right to the shelters and trailhead parking is right next to the tables, the stream and openess makes this a nice site at which to camp. The nearby \\\"Birches\\\" resereved for thru-hikers is totally in the woods and K. stream in front of the Ranger\\\'s cabin is the nearest water. One shelter is new and there is a picnic table. By far the best feature of the Birches, however, is a cable sytem for hanging food and/or your entire pack high up between the trees while you hike the mountain. ($18 for a shelter at Katahdin Stream, Sept. \'04)
