Can you believe this shelter???!!! Some 35 years ago this was the first shelter that I stayed in when I started backpacking. The old shelter, which is now been remodeled, is still there but now is the backbone of all these new additions. Now the shelter is a freaking Hilton!! There is not a bad memory surrounding the shelter. Not even the 20 inches of snow that fell one January night...the fire burned bright and warm in that fireplace for three days until the weather broke and we could return to Newfound Gap. I have often wondered what happened to that spotted skunk that a hiker OD on chocolate chip cookies. I swear that skunk sleep all night on his back with all four paws up in the air next to the east wall.
