Description by celt
This is the summit warming hut for Mad River Glen, a great Vermont Ski Area. Because this is a private building the GMC asks you check with them before depending on using this shelter. Its ususally open to hikers and has tables and benches inside. The single seat chair lift next door is the only one of its kind left in North America and has been in operation since the 1940's. Outside the winter it only runs a few times during the fall. The GMC built a privy just off the trail here in 2001. Poke around the summit for various views in all directions. Sunsets and sunrises. The nearest water is an unreliable spring 0.9 miles south at the Glen Ellen Spur.

Have stayed here four times. The view is great. Last time was July '03 and there is water about .3 miles down the Catamount ski trail. A map inside shows the way. However, it's a steep drop and a killer climb back up especially in the rain. The maint. road is longer, but much easier (25 min RT).

I stayed here during by SOBO Long Trail thru-hike in August 1979. The morning dawned cool (low 30\'s) and clear with fog blanketing the valleys below and the sun rising above the New Hampshire mountains. I distinctly remember heading out early in wet shorts and T-shirt, walking briskly to try to stay warm.
