The final ascent of Cold Mountain in central Virginia on a breezy, brisk Fall afternoon (October 2002). The views from the open ridgeline trail could not be captured in a two-dimensional snapshot.

It was very windy when we crossed here in May of 2001. I had to hold my hat in place. This caused me no small degree of difficulty, having to do 3 things at once: hold my hat, hold my hiking stick and walk all at the same time!
