Never made a sound when he stepped out onto the trail either. I almost walked right into it. Was about 4ft away before i realized it was there

That's about the size of the bear that was eating berries off to the side of the trail as I was SOBO out of Hampton, TN climbing up to Pond Flats in late October 2007. I only heard it after I had passed, and it was more than close enough at 30 yards. I'd estimate 300-400 pounds. I think I would have messed my pants if I looked up to find it 4 feet away.

Wow, I'm a complete newbie. Trying to think what I would actually do if I walked up on a bear that size. The whole 'don't startle it, don't run' thing comes to mind but perhaps I'd just pass out from shock.
