Snow was still on the north-facing slopes of the mountains, and Sages Ravine was entirely iced in through March of 1975. After barely making it across the snowmelt-flooded stream, I slipped on the ice-covered trail and skidded down the steep icy slope towards the water, just stopping my descent by putting my foot against a sapling.
