Good water supply nearby, pretty location but a long way off the trail.

    True, only 0.2 miles off the AT, but straight down the hill using switchbacks. The water source is susceptible to drying out by Fall.

    stay on trail a real hiker does not use switch backs.

    The switchbacks are the official trail, but of course there are folks who insist in running straight down the hill.
