Description by refreeman
County/State: Rockland NY, Elevation: 1240'
Capacity is 6 people, Fee: No
Distance from the AT is .6 miles.
The closest water source is .5 miles down a very steep trail. So bring lots of water with you when visiting West Mountain Shelter. The south facing view of the Hudson River Valley right from the shelter is very beautiful. Two stone fireplaces are at the front right and left of the shelter. However, smoke from the fireplaces can become irritating. There are several places to pitch a tent behind the shelter.
Maintained by the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference.
1382.5 miles from Springer and 791.5 miles to Katahdin
Next shelter south 3.1 miles, William Brien Memorial Shelter.
Next shelter north 31.0 miles, RPH Shelter, however, Graymoor Friary Pavilion and Campsite is only about 12 miles north of West Mountain Shelter.
