Re: Uncle Nick Grindstaff's Headstone
I remember this vividly from my thru hike. It was one of the harshest days that I hiked. In late January of 2007 it was 31F and pouring rain. The rain was freezing as it hit the ground and on the trees. Very harsh conditions. I hiked more than 20 miles, and went several days without seeing another person. Seeing this really stuck in my mind. While I laid in the shelter south of this point (the one with the view on a clear day) the rain stopped and the frozen golf ball sized chunks of ice started to fall from the trees and bang down upon the tin roof of the shelter. This continued for almost fifteen minutes. I was wet and cold but made it through just fine. Something I will never forget. -

Adverse conditions add spice to a hike.
