Boy, if this is near Smugglers Notch, then I hiked up that same ski trail in early August 1979 when the wind was blowing about 40 mph and the rain had turned to sleet as the temperature dropped below 40F! This was my 16-year old brother's first-ever backpacking trip (LT SOBO thru) and we were soaked when we got to the base of Mansfield, so we headed to a motel room in Stowe to dry out instead of up to Taft Lodge.
