Re: Lunch Time at the Springer Mtn Shelter
The last time I saw this shelter was on the last day of the workshop (in 1992 beleive) in which Upper Loft Design students had assembled the frame, and we rigged the frame to be flown into position by an Army helicopter. I have a photo (will scan it and upload it soon) of myself and my son, less than a year old. He is now 15 years old. We are sitting on the floor frame (before siding and roofing was applied at the final location).
I was given the honor of christening the frame, and in the picture, my son was teething on the cork.
The frame was assembled in a feed lot outside of Clayton, GA.
All three shelters that I designed while working for Upper Loft Design were built as workshops, teaching folks how to timberframe.
This first design was unique, but the design was changed for Plum Orchard and Deep Gap, and as far as I know, the same design and plans were used for more shelters in GA later.
