I actually stepped on one in SNP. I was in knee-high grass looking for firewood and felt something under my foot, as I looked down I saw it slowly slither away. I clearly saw its rattle, but it never rattled and I very much remember that black/ashen color. I always assumed it was molting and was the reason it moved so slowly and didn't rattle. -

I've heard that the instinct to rattle is slowly being bred out through evolution. Feral hogs are to blame. A snake that rattles is more likely to be eaten by the swine. -
