    I actually stepped on one in SNP. I was in knee-high grass looking for firewood and felt something under my foot, as I looked down I saw it slowly slither away. I clearly saw its rattle, but it never rattled and I very much remember that black/ashen color. I always assumed it was molting and was the reason it moved so slowly and didn't rattle.

    I've heard that the instinct to rattle is slowly being bred out through evolution. Feral hogs are to blame. A snake that rattles is more likely to be eaten by the swine.
