Description by Irish Eddy
Gathland State Park is the former estate of George Alfred Townsend, a noted Civil War Correspondent, who used the pen name "Gath." He named the estate Gathland, sometimes called Gapland. The A.T. traverses the former estate grounds, as well as the Civil War Battlefield of Cramptons Gap. Townsend built a mausoleum on the estate to be used as his burial plot, but he died penniless in New York, and was buried in Philadelphia. This is a view of some of the stonework surrounding the mausoleum. SoBo 1154.8. NoBo 1023.5.
