Description for Unusual "fruit" On Trail

Description by Kerosene

Kerosene

Sunshine almost stepped on this just north of Stecoah Gap. It appears to be some sort of "fruit" that has broken open, and there seems to be something growing out of it. Very unusual. Anyone know what it might be?(May 2011)

The shell-like portion was formed on a leaf by a plant (Oak?) responding to an egg laid by a parasitic Gall Wasp. The "something growing" looks like a young moss plant.
