It is an Eastern Ratsnake (Pantherophis alleghaniensis). Used to be called Black ratsnake. It is common across much of VA and is completely harmless. They are considered rather beneficial in that they consume rodents amongst other prey. They can get fairly big, up around 5-6 feet long. Juveniles and adults have considerably different color/patterns. Hope this helps. 8Iron (AT Thru Hiker 2010 <---with luck!)
