Description for Rainbow Stream Shelter's baseball bat floor

Description by celt

celt

One of three older shelters in Maine that still has a "baseball bat" floor: Small diameter tree trunks are were used instead of dimentional lumber. Most sleeping pads are adequate enough to make this floor's odd texture a fine place to sleep. The shelter is a pretty place with bubbling Rainbow Stream right out the front door. It was photographed in 1987 for an article on the A.T. This is the shelter on the cover of the 2004 A.T. Databook. This picture was taken September 8, 1999.
The other baseball bat floors are in the Hurd Brook, the next lean-to north and Poplar Ridge in southern Maine.

I just finished reading Appalachian Trail Hiker 3 (The New Appallachian Trail)by ED Garvey. Garvey was very concerned about preserving these older shelters ! He mentioned the baseball bat floors several times.Keep the great pics coming,Streamweaver

Very interesting. I'd read about these floors but never had seen a picture. Which other shelters have the baseball bat floors? Thanks for sharing these great photos.
