Wow. On March 30, 2003, the date this photo was taken, I woke up about 3 miles away on Pine Mountain with my hiking partner and about a dozen college students. The unexpected blizzard had come in after midnight. We had about 6 inches of snow, and it was blowing hard and fast. I was under a tiny tarp, covered with snow, but actually quite warm in my bag. (But man, did I have to pee!) We got the students up, packed, and back down to our cars at Massey Gap without any major incidents, but it was definitely something that sticks in the memory. Your photo -- and the date -- brought it all back.
When we got back to Winston-Salem, it was about 60 degrees and sunny.
And, yeah, I see this photo as a GREAT reason to go for a hike. -
