I had day hiked to the shelter 2 weeks prior and saw the lack of firewood. This photo was taken about a 1/4 mile (uphill) from the shelter. The kids wanted marshmallows, so....
This was also after hiking up the 1.5 miles of the Chestnut Trail from the Ranger station, which reads "strenuous" *evil grin* for those under 14, it's referred to as "OMG! That's straight UP!" -

I have learned, during hiking season, you better start picking up nice firewood about a mile before you get to the shelter. It doesn't take much to start/have a good fire.
