Description for What Is This?

I noticed this during May of 2009 in VA just south of Wise Shelter. It has always been a mystery to me, but last night I read and article in National Geographic and they had a picture somewhat similar to this which they described as being pipelines carrying sap from Sugar Maple trees in VT.

I think they may be there to collect tree sap for Maple Surap. -

I confirm that those are lines for maple sap . In spring, they drill a hole in the tree and plug the line into it.
