Description by Irish Eddy
Gathland State Park is the former estate of George Alfred Townsend, a noted Civil War Correspondent, who used the pen name "Gath." He named the estate Gathland, sometimes called Gapland. The A.T. traverses the former estate grounds, as well as the Civil War Battlefield of Cramptons Gap, a part of the larger Battle of South Mountain, on September 14, 1862. This marker notes that soldiers kille in battle on both sides were buried here for a period of time. The Union dead were reinterried at Antietam National Cemetary in 1867, and the Confederate dead were reinterred at Rose Hill Cemetary in hagerstown, MD, in 1874. SoBo 1154.8. NoBo 1023.5.
