We have had them on the island of Montreal on the very west end in a large university arboretum. When I was an 11yr old kid, (~45 yrs ago) I caught a big one and brought it home. It never bit me or even tried to bite me. After a few days my dad and I took it back and let it go. We had lots of ribbon and garter snakes but this one was huge. Now I just admire them from a distance so it is not threatened or stressed. -

oldnevada thanks for your comment, they are a great snake and if bothered will tend to take off or defend themselves although as you have said they can be rather placid and calm... Thanks, Chuck
