I think they are Wintergreen aka Checkerberry, Gaultheria procumbens. Euell Gibbons reported in his book \"Stalking the Healthful Herbs\" that the red berries can be used to make a nice jam and leaves can be used to make tea or wine.

Looks like wintergreen to me. Sometimes called teaberry up north. Very common here. Bite down or chew on the raw leaves for a mint like flavor. Like teaberry gum.

funny, saw this pic and reflected on last weeks hike in SNP where I actually picked a \'tea berry\' and at it....years ago chewing gum was flavored from this plant
