Description by celt
This is a shelter in the Northern Presidentals maintained by the Randolph Mountain Club. Its 0.9 miles west of the A.T. (about 30 minutes) via the Israel Ridge Path (listed in the A.T. Data Book). Not a thru hiker favorite but in bad weather it could be a cheaper, closer, more convenient alternative to the other RMC Camps, The AMC Huts at Madison Spring or Lakes Of The Clouds, or hiking the A.T. until your below treeline (5 miles north, 9.5 south). Tent platform are also available. July 2003.

The RMC cabins and shelters are a great alternative to the AMC huts. While no food is served and accomodations are more primitive, Grey Knob cabin is open year round, and they cost only a fraction of what a hut stay costs.
