George W. Outerbridge Shelter in Pennsylvania
George W. Outerbridge Shelter in Pennsylvania
George W. Outerbridge Shelter, Section 3 of the trail in Pennsylvania.

An old shelter named after one of the first persons to hike the entire AT, George W. Outerbridge was a gynecologist born in Philadelphia on May 12, 1881 and died January 14, 1967.

The classic 1975 book Hiking the Appalachian Trail, Volume One (Rodale Press, Inc., Emmaus, Pennsylvania) has a first person account of his time spent on the trail from 1932 to 1939, when he finished the trail in Damascus, Virginia.

Dr. Outerbridge was educated at Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania (not too shabby!). During World War I in France he was in charge of a venereal disease clinic.

He lived an interesting life, to say the least.
