Default Another Missing Hiker - White Mountains - Alexander 'Gregory' Auriemma

Just in case a Whiteblazer has seen him.....

    http://www.nh1.com/news/conway-polic...-nh-mountains/

Default Hiker Missing in the Whites

Sharing this story in case anyone came across Greg Auriemma while they were hiking in the Whites over the past two weeks. I went from Hanover to Moosilauke around the same time and met a few dozen hikers that would have been going through there around that time. I didn't see any mention of the specific trail(s) he was taking but thought he might cross the path of some thru-hikers.

Thats a big area. No way to pair it down to what trail or mountain he was to hike?

Starting from Conway, he could have gone anywhere. No indication of what he was planning on doing or where here was planning on going. Streams have been running high since spring and rocks slippery. Since no one has stumbled upon him yet, he either wandered off a trail, fell off a ledge or got swept down a stream. Or has a new life in Argentina.

This news report has some additional information...

It appears he may have been lost along the Dry River Trail, the information does not bode well.

    More info: http://www.unionleader.com/public-sa...tains-20170716

I got the link from the thread on vftt. Not a great place to be lost this time of year with the water, as mentioned above. Time to comb the dry river (anyone picturing Spaceballs combing the desert? lol)

    Hope they find him..

His backpack is rather large and should sustain him for a fair amount of time and in all weather conditions

Seems consistent with an accidental backcountry death. Sheesh!!

"abandoned camp" would imply that while he may own all the gear one would need, it is mostly not currently on his person.

The Dry River area got nailed a few years ago by Hurricane Irene. The FS elected to spend the money available to repair the damage on other projects and eventually put in rough relocations around the worst damaged areas. Its a wilderness area and the trails are not blazed making navigation tough. Several folks have got lost in the area over the years.

Seems odd how little mention of this there has been on-line and in social media -- whether on www.vftt.org or any of the WMNF or AMC sites or even local news.

Sounds like he went down the Dry River Cut off from Mizpah and then camped at the old Dry River shelter #3 site? That would be about a 4 hour hike in from 302. Abandoned campsite isn't a good sign. Did he get swept down stream while trying to get water or washing? With all the rain we've been having, I wouldn't be surprised.

    Some additional information...

    http://nj1015.com/lost-new-jersey-hi...-a-cell-phone/

    No cell phone,
His tent found with medications in it.
A 30 mile 10 day hike planned, sounds like he had planned for more of a camping trip

My parents were " lost hikers". In 2007. It didn't end well. If anyone has seen predator type people in area or have any pictures of same, please report to the local authorities.

My best thoughts to family and for a positive outcome.

Sorry this had an unhappy end, but glad he was found. Thanks to the Pemigewasset Search and Rescue Team and to the AMC work crew who found him.

Any further news? So sorry to read this - was hoping he was just lost or maybe hiked out & hadn't reported in yet. Another really good reason to pay attention to your fellow hikers - know a little about them, etc. Never know when it might come in handy. And give someone your hike iteniary, and sign the registers. Sympathy to his family & friends.

No published cause of death at this point. His tent was found unoccupied.

Cause of death cannot be determined.
