I lived near there several years ago. Hiked up to Black Rock many times. So yeah, good chance it's not an AT hiker, maybe a day hiker, maybe somebody got careless on the rocks.

Another article — reports that the body was too decomposed to immediately determine gender:

it would seem the original article's headline is misleading to put it mildly.

    Agreed...

Is "below the Black Rock Overlook in South Mountain State Park." not on the AT? I am not familiar with the area.

If the body was not actually found on the treadway It should not be considered found "on" the AT.

If within a few hundred yards of trail, maybe it could be listed as "near" the AT.

I hope they can identify the remains however

to me the fact that it was so decomposed combined with the description of the terrain it is on and my recollection of the area makes me think it was found on the bottom of a cliff that is a short ways off of the AT. at best. i honestly am not 100% sure the AT even goes anywhere near south mountain state park or if there are any trails that connect the two

there are no cliffs on or even especially close to the AT near there

seems its closer to the AT then i thought but still not on the AT and sounds like someone fell off the cliff.

funny, the trail description at this link mentions the turn off not being as evident from the south. i guess thats how i have no recall of it, i was headed north. too bad. seems like it would have been a nice place to stop at. maybe i do hike too fast after all.

The AT run smack through South Mountain SP just north of I-70.

Black Rock Overlook is right off the AT. It's about 2.5 miles past Pine Knob Shelter, just north of Annapolis Rock and about a mile before Pogo Campground.

We're going to have to bring the body out by hand," she said.

As opposed to what, by drone?

Also, why is the body being transported to Baltimore for examination? Do they not have the resources in Washington or Frederick Counties?

As opposed to helicopter or motorized vehicle. The AT to the Black Rock spur is wide enough to get 4x4 vehicles to the spur trail -- it used to be a dirt road to/from the Black Rock Hotel back in the early 1900s. But if the body is below the overlook, people will need to hike down to retrieve the body and hike it back out to the AT junction.

And...its the state law for someone in unusual death.

Different states have very different requirements.

My state keeps it local for instance, by county

In Georgia, for another example, all autopsies are done by georgia bureau of investigation at a couple of regional centers. Funeral plans must be delayed several days or more until body is shipped off and received back. Funeral home cant commit to viewing time, until they get it. Bit of a pain, went thru it this yr there.

In our state every county has a coroner that declares the person deceased. If there appears to be foul play, officer involved shootings, or unattended death, they will ship the body to a region medical examiners officer. The state criminal investigation and identification assists the local law enforcement agencies when requested.

Still tragic, no matter the circumstances. I saw the story earlier today after they had identified the deceased. Haven't seen any accounts from the family about when he left, etc. Makes you hope it ended quickly (quick, catastrophic, painless disruption of a major body function) instead of starving or being in pain for a week. Sigh.
