I saw that when I looked at the available dates. Can we still plan to start when we want?

    Estimated Start Date January 1
    Approach Trail - no
I am posting this as a tentative. I am possibly going to be laid off in December and based on whether or not this happens my thru hike stands in the balance. I am not wishing for this to happen but it could. I am setting myself up for a deep winter hike and have almost all the gear for it. I have over 300 miles of section hike done already but I am planning on doing it all in one swell foop. I know a lot of you know me as a trail angel here in Waynesboro, PA and if you happen to come thru the Mason-Dixon line send me an email as I would be glad to help anytime I am free. I take it you are talking about the http://www.appalachiantrail.org/home...r-registration. It's voluntary and you can go whenever you like and don't have to register.

ATC Voluntary registration isn't available for 2017 yet. Looks like they are bringing a new system online in October...

Can you take the approach trail out to Amicalola Lodge from Springer? I mean, I suppose you could, but that would be downhill, right?

Correct. See post 26 in this thread:

"I just went to the Thru-Hiker Registration page on the ATC site. It says registration for 2017 wont be available until October."

Yeah, my plan is to stay overnight at the lodge, so I'm ok about the extra 8+ miles after summiting Springer...

Okay, an update to our original registry. After much contemplation, we are switching to a NOBO hike beginning on March 8, including the approach trail.
