You get esbit residue all over the heat exchanger. Tried the jetboil pot with esbit and with alcohol (no residue from alcohol). It does increase efficiency. But so does the Olicamp pot with the heat exchanger. Esbit residue is an issue to clean out of the small spaces in the heat exchangers on those types of pots. Having tried a myriad of combinations, especially in cold and wind, I've settled on the reliability and convenience of canister stoves regardless of the weight penalty. HYOH.

One of the advantages of surviving into Fossilhood is the accumulating of various and sundry gear. Stoves and cookouts are at the top of my list quantity wise. I'm a firm believer in petroleum fueled stoves.
Thanks for doing the dirty work for us. I can avoid contaminating my JetBoil pot.
The last time I stopped in Rhome, TX, returning from the Weminuche Wilderness, it was early September after noon and 105 F. We didn't stay long.
    Have fun!

Already answered however Jetboil pot over a tealite candle holder filled with alcohol does work reasonably well and is pretty darn efficient for a alchy stove.

Forgive me. I missed the previous JetBoil response.
I prefer not to burn alcohol.

    Default More experimentation

I found an Esbit Pocket Stove in my box-'o-stoves so I decided to test it out while waiting for the Patriots to embarrass the Eagles.

    I ran out of Esbit 14g tablets. I'm using Coghlan's 7g tabs ($5-6/24 pack).

Headline result: 16 oz. Water (60F) boiled in a Stanko Greasepot in 6:30 minutes with two tabs

This Esbit Pocket Stove has a more optimized distance from tab to pot measurement. With my ruler, it was 1.25" from top of the tab to bottom of the pot. I used an aluminum foil screen. Two Coghlan's Fuel Tabs (2x7g=15g) were burning in the same place as a single Esbit tab would sit.

The Stanko Pot is very wide and short. I also tested my Toaks Titanium 650 mL pot. It failed to boil. I had to "bend" the sides in to accomodate the narrower pot. Even with two tabs, the maximum temperature was 191F with flame-out at 10:19.

I loved that pass to Foles. and I live outside Boston in the burbs. So sweet that it was the same play Pats tried earlier.

Thats exactly the Esbit stove I'm using. Works fine.

One might compare the thermal conductivity of Aluminium to Titanium.
Aluminium seems to conduct heat 10x better than Titan (might depend on the specific alloy though).
Why do people use Titanium pots?

    hahaha, lollollol

(and I don't give a whit about football)

And a somewhat lighter and more compact setup with Esbit is the tri-wing burner with a Toaks 550 pot and a Ti foil windscreen. Several times I have used two of the 5g Esbit tabs (yes, there is such a beast) to boil 2 cups of water. A full cook kit (including my 4.5g coffee cup, spoon and lighter!) with fuel for 3-4 days weighs something like 6.7 oz (a little fuzzy on memory here, but that's close).

No clue. I have a nice wide 1 liter aluminum pot and lid that’s lighter than a narrow Snow Peak 750 ml titanium pot. Go figure.

With these thin pots the difference in conductivity is negligible between Al and Ti. If you're just boiling water it really doesn't matter.

I've tested it... here's the graph... alcohol stove but I don't remember which one.

Thanks cmoulder for testing this. Looks like the difference is negligible.

It might make a bigger difference if the stove setup is less than perfect (which in my experience it is, more often than not)
And it might make all the difference when doing real cooking (which I totally lack experience, as far as Esbit is concerned)

This is true, Leo, but in my tests I did my best to keep controls tight, the main one being pot base diameter, with the same windscreen setup used for each one and same ambient conditions, etc, etc. A well controlled test really takes a lot of work.

I don't know where I put my data sheets but if you search BPL there is more info about my test on one of the stove threads.

Toaks Light 700ml, boiled 3 cups with 1 large esbit approx 14 min. 40 degree start water temp, 35 degree air temp. Used cone style windscreen.

I modified a tri leg pot support, added a ti BGET Brian Green Esbit Tray to it.

    Actual 212°F? Excellent!

Photo of your cone... or is that still in the skunkworks?

On a recent 4-night trip I used Esbit 14g tabs with the Toaks 550 and it seemed to get more efficient as it got gunked up so I left it on the pot. I was boiling only 2 cups or a little over 2 cups (for breakfast) and there was a big chunk of a 14g tab left over. I would have used 2x 5g tabs but those are hard to find and more expensive than just using single 14g tabs, and it's nice to have the buffer of more energy if it's super windy.

I have about 1000 AT miles under my belt, and this is my conclusions:
    1. Most (myself included) carry canister, Rocket Pocket being the most popular stove.
    2. Some carry alcohol, and this is what works for them .
    3. Few use wood as fuel, either in a wood stove or at camp site fire circles.
you will be surprised how long a small fuel canister will last
