Default Do you have a map with 'no dogs allowed' areas listed (any trail)

Here's a map I made. (I just randomly added circles)

    appalachian_trail.jpg

Does anybody have a map of the A.T, or any other pretty long 100+ mile trail with 'no dogs allowed' areas marked?

For example, I know on the A.T. dogs are NOT allowed in federal parks and a few other areas. But Im kinda slow at visualizing where that actually is. (I'm not sure how many areas dogs aren't allowed in, but I'm guessing its a handful, at least)

But if you have any maps with the actual areas listed (like the fake one above) that would help me visualize better, and help me figure out areas ahead of time and consider alternate routes/transtportain/board for jack, because we want to try to get out onto some more trails.

Any maps with restrictions marked would be appreciated. (for the A.T/PCT etc)

Dogs are not allowed in the Great Smokie Mountian National Park or in Baxter state park in Maine. That's it for the AT. Many National Parks ban pets in the back country so stay out of the national parks and you don't have to worry. Pleanty of other places to go.

oh. its just the 2 places not he A.T? I seriously was thinking 5+

Last month I was online and found a doggy boarder that would pick up the dog at the closest trail head to Smokies, board your dog for a few days, and then bring the dog and meet you at the nearest trail head past the smokies. I think it was only $200 plus nightly fee. I thought that was very reasonable, but not if I had to do it over and over on the trail.

Kinda a relief knowing its only 2 places on the A.T. (Not that I'm at a place yet to seriously consider a thru with my dog. But its nice knowing theres only 2 places off limits)

*EDIT* If not allowed in Baxter, that means not allowed at the finish line for a photo with the sign, huh? I bet thats a bummer for anyone who has done a Thru with a dog but had to finish alone and not get the ultimate photo with it at the sign

Just south of Bear Mountain Bridge, the Trailside Museum and Zoo does not allow dogs...fortunately thats only maybe a quarter mile of white blazes and easily avoided by hikers with dogs.

Maybe you should call the AT folks in Harpers Ferry. I bet they know.

How come I can find these things and I don't even have a dog? Shenandoah N.P. Backcountry Camping rules. Jack is welcome, but he must be on a leash. Just the Canadian parks.

    10) Pets must be leashed at all times and are not permitted on some trails.
Pets can frighten wildlife and other hikers. Keep Shenandoah a place where you can hike with your pet by keeping it leashed. Practice the Leave No Trace Principle of “Respect Wildlife” and “Be Considerate of Other Visitors.”

Just thiught I would note that there is also a old and weathersd "no dogs allowed" sign on the North side of the Route 22 trail crossing in Pawling NY, right where the A.T. goes into the nature/game preserve. From what I can tell the sign is either incorrect or utterly unenforced, last time I was there I encountered at least 15 other hikers with dogs in the 5 mile section between there and Wiley shelter (this was on a sunny Sunday morning on a holiday weekend).

I only mention it because I know some dayhikers that have turned around when they got to that sign thinking that it was a valid/enforced rule and I don't want it to screw up anyone's hike.

I just made another thread titled "How far is it 'okay' to skip" http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/show...49#post1885449 asking about how far it is okay to "hitch/skip" to still be a thru.

I kinda got the idea to ask from this thread..... The smokes have 71 miles of trail. IF I didn't want to board my dog, would I need to walk at least 71 miles out of the way to get back on the trail, to make up for the lost amount? Or if you and your dog hitched a ride around the park and got back on the trail, would that be considered a thru? or a cheat?

Just wanna know peoples opinions of getting off/on the trail.

    You're welcome.
A more focused thread like "How did you thru-hike with a dog?" may work better than your Skipping thread.

Well it was for other curiosities too. I didn't know if those who hitched into town had to place their feet back in their last footstep once they return to the trail, or if it was a "hey, I have no problem picking you up to give you a ride to the store, man. Heck, even if you want, I can take you up to the next crossing where you can get back on the trail up there and save ya a bit".

I didn't just make that thread for the dog. It was more of an A.D.D/O.C.D curiosity as well.

But yeah, I get the jist now.

Thanks Mags. I knew the ATC folks would have thought of this before.

I have a map that lists all US trails,
It indicates that dogs, horses, mountain bikes, and all motorized vehicles are not allowed. It does indicate that service dogs and well trained children are allowed.

Unfortunately that map is at my house and nobody reads it.

Venchka, the second quote in your signature is awesome. I remember watching the race when he said that, and the announcers started laughing. Love Kimi.

Just FYI, dogs ARE allowed in Shenandoah National Park along the AT but must be on a leash. There are a few trails in SNP that prohibit dogs but they are allowed on the AT.
