Are the only " no pal zones " GSMNP and Shenandoah? I'm trying to decide if my buddy is going with me next Spring. I can deal with GSMNP so if those are the only areas my buddy will have to learn to live with a raincoat.

SNP is dog friendly but you better keep that dude on a leash or they will fine you big time.
Other areas which are not "no pal friendly" but places to keep in mind of for extra awareness of dog safety are the few farms along the trail that may have grazing cattle, sheep, longhorns or be on private land - open grassy areas also are a great opportunity for dogs to run astray.
Areas that I think of off the top of my head are Max Patch, Roan Highlands, Grayson Highlands, Osborn Farm at Cross Mountain TH. Farm on both sides of Nebo RD in VA. Chestnut Ridge in VA. Rice Field in VA.

Keep in mind dogs may not be allowed at some hiker hostels as well as some public transportation options.
On the plus side, hikers have told me that hitching is quite easy as there are many dog lovers that stop to meet your dog !!

No other dog free zones than those mentioned. One experience that we encountered was in Pearisburg VA: Coming out of the woods encountering a long patch of very hot asphalt and concrete. This can probably be mitigated if you time your road stretches early in the morning or in the afternoon after the sun moves. The oppressive heat and humidity can dampen your canines fun. If your little buddy doesnt get excited every day about putting on the pack and hiking, then it is time to send them home and then they can come back for a week or longer. Keep a phone number or two with you so that if your doggy is done you can call one of us close to the trail to come get him and bring him back. They hike 2000 miles by the time human hikers are half way! Enjoy your hike. We love hiking with the dog.
Wow, my longest ever post! Sorry, folks.
