Default BMT section overview maps: Use or Lose?

    Quick opinion question...

Working on the 2014-15 guidebook and I've been thinking of getting rid of the "state maps". The three maps that are two pages wide that show the overview of the BMT. I've never been happy with those, and I don't want to spend days creating them from scratch. Of course I also know the trail very well, so to me they are useless. I' looking for opinions from people that have hiked the BMT with my guide or are thinking of hiking the BMT.

    Thanks.

I used the Nat Geo maps exclusively. If I recall, the maps are kinda blury and give the roughest of rough overviews. IMO, you could leave them out.

Exactly what I was thinking. Plus the are a PITA to do.

What I was thinking of adding is a road/trail map of that network of roads and trails around Thunder Rock that sometimes confuse people. And maybe something like that for the section around Cherry Log.

just got the guide a few weeks back, thanks, rock.
the sectional maps really arent detailed enough to be of any real value. i do like the one on p.61, you can see where the bmt goes in relation to the at. i bought the nat'l geo maps.

You could draw something by hand for the tricky sections as Homan as done in his Citico/Slickrock book.

Or maybe you could design a clever way to include a fold-out/pull out map like the old AT guide books used to have.

Or you could sell the guide book along with the Nat G 781 map.

I know the maps you are talking about. I've got an old AT Guidebook that has that.

I did not use the overview map. I did use the individual maps although I found it difficult to go from one to another when "North" changed. The section around Cherry Log definitely needs clarification. We need more markings on 515 and the road walk north of 515, exiting the really nice subdivision, needs many more blazes. The turn to the North after the long east\west road walk can be tricky. I now know where to look for the blazes but I spent a lot of time looking for them the first time through, a couple of years ago.
